Evaluation of prelim shoot

Scene
We filmed our prelim in the theatre at school, this was a perfect place for filming firstly as no one was there so it was completly quiet but most importantly the theatre is a very large room where we had enough space to film a variety of differnt shots such as a wide angle or over the shoulder shot. Futhermore, there is two big doors which we used to try add a dramatic effect for a big entrance and dramatic exit.

Setting up camera
As this was the first real filming we have done with the professional equitment we were shown how to properly use and set up the camera and the tripod. Although it wasnt to dificult and we were quickly able to grasp how to use it and to begin filming on our own. The tripod was not hard to set up we just had to ajust the height of the tipod to what angle and height we wanted to film certain shots at. Similar went for the camera we were able to successfully set it up and figure out differnt techniques such as zooming in and revrse.

Filming
The first shot we did was a tracking shot of one of our actors walking into the scene trough the door, this was not on the storyborad but we added this as we felt it would add extra effect and rama to the scene. We then mainly stuck to the order of the story board for example the next shot was an over the shoulder shot off actor B so we fuilmed the whole scene at that angle so when it came to editing we had every angle and shot which we could edit and this amde sure we covered evrything as we had a deadline and couldnt re-film if we missed any shots. This was the method we used throughout meaning we had close ups of both actors, a wide shot and an over the shoulder shot of both actors saying the whole scripts. Again this meant we had every angle covered so when it came to editing we had a lot of flexibility to work with. We also ended with a tilt shot which wasnt on the story board but like the tracking shot at the beggining we added it for extra dama and effect. Filming for the most part was a large success there wasn't any problems with continuity and we filmed all the differet angles and shots we need to film in the time slot we had. Our actors werent very enthusiastic and did not read the dialouge with as much conviction as i wouldve preferred and need the sheet to remeber the dialogue but for the most part they were responsive and did a good job.

Filming and editing?

Shooting this prelim was the first time I was able to use a proper camera to film and it wasn't to difficult to set up. We were shown how to set up the camera and it was rather straight forward, we also used a tall tri pod with wheels that help us to film at differnt angles and keep the camera still. Editing was difficult as it was the first time we edited using the software before and we filmed all the shots through the whole film so we had a lot of cutting and moving to do. We quickly realised we made a mistake when filming as one of the doors was still shutting later on in the prelim video when it should have already been shut and it is a clear mistake and made a loud noise. We weren't Abel to edit this out as we wanted to stick to the storyboard. Another editing mistake that we made was at the end of one of the lines after a specific camera shot the last word is repeated when the camera changes angles which is another clear editing mistake.

How well I think I did during the process?
Overall I believe I think I did quite well considering this was my first experience at filming and editing. We did mange to film all the different camera angles for all the different lines so we could follow the storyboard. But I did have troubles editing and made a few obvious errors, but these can be easily avoidable when it come to my main task in a few months.

What would I like to do better next time?
The main think I would like to do better next time is editing. This is where my troubles came from and I made a few mistakes but hopefully next time after a bit of practise from this prelim I will be able to avoid making silly and simple editing errors like I did for this prelim task.

How did we work as a group?
We actually worked very well as a group and helped each other out a lot. during the filming we all contributed equally and took turns giving ideas and filming the different angles and camera shots. The same goes for when editing we all dove head first into it but unfortunately we were all unexperienced in this field and struggled at times to fully grasp it. But that doesn't mean we didn't try as hard as possible at a group to avoid these mistakes.

what would I like to learn more about during the filming process?
Again I would love to learn how to use the editing software and edit properly as this is where I struggled most. I would also like to learn how I can use different camera shots to tell a visual narrative when there isn't dialogue and the meaning behind what these shots portray.
